Manually updating forge?

I'm new, and i know this whole thing is kind of coming to an end and they are not distributing it any more, but that's why I ask, is it possible to manually update forge in the cauldron.jar so I can continue to use this. will it make the whole thing to unstable? will it work in the first place?
